"Down By The Salley Gardens" はアイルランドの "国民的" 作家、ウィリアム・バトラー・イェイツ（William Butler Yeats, 1865 - 1939）が、農村で老婆が歌っていた３行の歌詞を基に、古くからアイルランドに伝わる歌を復元したといわれます。

Down by the salley gardens my love and I did meet;
柳の園の傍らで　彼女と僕は会った；

She passed the salley gardens with little snow-white feet.
彼女は柳の園を抜けた　小さな雪のように白い足で。

She bid me take love easy, as the leaves grow on the tree;

Yeats published "Down By The Salley Gardens," a poem based on an Irish folk song, in a collection called Crossways in 1890. Although some readers have tried to locate the "Salley" gardens, the source is the Gaelic word for willow trees, saileach.
